Banner Advertising

Banner advertising is the method to place a ‘graphic image’ of your company, services or products on another website. The reason for online banner advertising is usually to generate brand-awareness and to drive traffic (internet users – customers) through to a specific website page of the banner advertiser by the use of a hyperlink.

Main Types of Banner Ad’s
There are three main types of banners that can be used, each offering more interactivity than the last and therefore increasing ‘Dwell Time

Standard Banner Ads: Flat Gif or Jpeg image depicting your product, service, company or message. Interaction: Hyperlink through to advertiser website.

Gif Animated Banner Ads: Animated Gif banner that displays several images to give the impression of motion. Interaction: Hyperlink through to advertiser website.

Rich Media Banner Ads: Rich media banner adverts usually have audio, video, Java and Shockwave. Interaction: Offers a high degree of user interaction on the rich media banner with a focus of increasing ‘Dwell Time’.

Online Banner Advertising Statistics 2009
A recent internet marketing survey conducted by EyeBlaster.com shows a steep decline in standard banner advertising click-through-rate (CTR) from 5% down to .01%! This figure shows that traditional-banner advertising with flat graphics has died an internet death. On the other hand ‘Rich Media’ banner advert click through rates (CTR) are around the 0.35% which shows that users clearly give more attention to the interactive rich media banner advert than the standard flat graphic.

Banner Ad Networks
There are various ‘Banner Advertising Networks’ on the internet which will take the headache out of promoting your own banner to individual websites. These networks usually ask you to create an account and upload your banner (some offer banner creation services allowing you to create your banner online); select a target market which is best suited for your company/product/service. With all banner networks there is usually a charge associated with using their services and this can be based on:

Banner impressions – the amount of times your banner is shown
Cost Per Thousand (CPM) – a set price per thousand banner shows
Cost Per Click (CPC) – a set price per click through unit

Online Marketing Companies
If you would prefer for a company to manage your banner advertising you can use an internet marketing company that can create the right type of advertising banner for your company/product/service and strategically place it on targeted online platforms. Banner advertising campaigns can be expensive especially if you are going down the road of having a rich-media banner created, so targeted placement of your banner is crucial to not only maximise CTR but ensure you are receiving the rigt type of traffic.
