In the UK an initiative called the Mobile Advertising Programme (MAP) which is being facilitated by the GSMA  and consisting of 5 GSMA members (Vodafone Group , Telefonica O2 Europe , T-Mobile International , FT-Orange Group and 3) has been formed to analyse the metrics and measurement processes for mobile advertising and marketing. Some details of the study have been released and show similar results to measurements taken in the US. The study shows that 60% of UK consumers connect to the internet via their mobile and visit phone network portals. The study also shows that UK mobile search behaviour is similar to computer search behaviour – listing top visited sites using mobile phones compared to top visited sites via a computer. It shows that a user will visit roughly the same sites using their mobile phone as they do when they are at their computer.

- Mobile internet is used for the whole day and 7am to 1pm shows the highest access with over 22% of all internet browsing via mobiles within this time.

Smart Phones Drive Mobile Marketing
The new ‘smart phones’ have had a major impact on the mobile marketing industry increasing mobile internet access through their larger screens, application download features and faster internet browsing. Apple announced recently over 1.5 billion downloads from its mobile Apple Store. Other phone providers such as Blackberry, Nokia and LG are experiencing high mobile high mobile traffic through their own platforms, however recent figures show that user-loyalty to online network brand is slowly eroding as users search other network providers, game websites and web content outside of the network’s domain.

Mobile Marketing Agencies and Marketing Software
Starting a mobile advertising campaign is pretty easy these days with the amount of mobile advertising agencies and mobile marketing software available to anybody who is looking to tap into the mobile-market.

Agencies:
A mobile marketing agency is ideal if you want someone to handle the whole campaign from start to finish. Most agencies will provide all you need for a full campaign including help selecting the right target market (age, gender, socio-economic grouping), strategy, creative message design, execution, technology build out and more. Using an agency can take the headache out of setting up, executing and managing a mobile Ad campaign, however you are likely to incur higher costs with add-on agency fees.

Software:
If you don’t want the higher costs of full agency campaign management then there are various software platforms available for individuals and businesses to manage their own mobile marketing online. These software’s will allow you to use tools that will enable you to set-up, run and manage your mobile campaign from start to finish using tools such as; creative tools that allow you to create text, voice, and multimedia messaging, scheduling and send tools that allow you to select your target mobile market, XML data feeds, analytics, premium SMS (allows end mobile users to billed directly via their phone bills), multimedia content management systems and website integration (allowing subscribers to sign up via your website).

Interesting Mobile Marketing Fact:
Mobile advertising first appeared in Finland in 2000 when a free daily newspaper headline service was sent out by SMS text messaging and was sponsored through advertising.
